Quick answers and how-tos for Tanksmith. If you don't find what you need, write to us — we read every email.

Getting started

How do I add my first tank?

Open Tanksmith, tap the + button on the Tanks tab, give your tank a name (Display, Frag, QT…), set the volume in gallons, and pick a type that matches your tank's purpose: Mixed Reef, SPS-Dominant, LPS-Dominant, Softie, FOWLR, or Quarantine. The tank type controls which target bands appear on parameter charts.

How do I log a parameter reading?

From a tank's detail screen, tap Log in the top-right. Choose the parameter, type or step the value, optionally add a note (e.g. "Salifert lot AK24-09"), and Save. The new reading appears on the chart immediately, color-coded green if in the target band or red if outside.

How does the dosing recommendation work?

From any tank, tap Dosing. Pick your dosing recipe (Randy Recipe #1, BRS 2-Part, ESV B-Ionic, Aquaforest 1+/2+, Tropic Marin All-For-Reef, or Red Sea A/B/C). Tanksmith fits a linear regression across your last 7, 14, or 30 days of readings to compute the actual consumption rate, then converts that into mL/day for the recipe and tank volume you specified. Confidence is shown — high, medium, or low — based on how many readings and how clean the trend is. Calibrate from there: if your alk drifts up over time, reduce the dose; if it drifts down, increase.

Coral photo timeline

How do I add growth photos to a coral?

From a tank's Livestock list, tap a coral. On its detail screen, tap + and choose Add photo. iOS will ask for Photos access the first time. Photos are downscaled to 1400px and stored on your device only.

How do I compare two photos side by side?

On a coral's detail screen, tap any two photos in the timeline. A Compare button appears at the top — tap it to see them side by side. Useful for tracking color shifts and growth over months.

How do I track frag lineage?

From a coral's detail screen, tap +Cut a frag to create a new Livestock entry that's automatically linked back to the mother colony. Or tap +Record frag given/sold/traded to log a frag that left the system.

Tank Report PDF

How do I share my tank with a forum?

From a tank's detail screen, tap Tank Report, choose 30/60/90 days, and tap Share Report. The PDF includes parameter trend charts, livestock roster, and equipment service status. Use the iOS share sheet to send it to Reddit, Reef2Reef, Messages, or save to Files.

Inventory

Where do I track my test kits?

Settings → Test Kits. Add each kit by brand and parameter; opened-date defaults to today and expiry auto-suggests based on common reagent shelf life (Salifert 24mo, Hanna 18mo, Triton 12mo, etc.). Expired kits show in red so you don't trust a bad reading.

Why track salt batches?

When a salt batch is reported bad on the forums, you'll want to know if you used it. Settings → Salt Batches lets you log each bucket by brand and lot, and mark which one is currently active.

Equipment

How do I track service intervals?

Add equipment from a tank's detail screen, set the interval in days (sensible defaults are pre-filled per category — skimmer weekly, RODI membrane every 2 years, etc.). The Equipment tab shows everything sorted by urgency, with overdue items in red.

Privacy & data

Where is my data stored?

On your device, in your iPhone or iPad's local storage. Tanksmith does not sync to iCloud, does not send anything to a server, and does not require an account. Read the full Privacy Policy.

How do I move my data to a new phone?

If you restore your new phone from an iCloud or Mac backup of the old one, Tanksmith's data comes along automatically — that's a system-level Apple backup, not Tanksmith uploading anything. A direct in-app export/import is on the roadmap.

Will Tanksmith ever require a subscription?

No. Tanksmith is a one-time purchase. Future major versions may be paid upgrades, but the version you bought will continue to work with no recurring fees and no nag screens.

Bugs & feature requests

I found a bug.

Email support@tanksmith.app with: your iPhone/iPad model, iOS version, Tanksmith version, and what you were doing when it happened. A screenshot helps.

I have a feature idea.

Send it. Reefer feedback shapes the roadmap.
